Posts: 874 05/07/2006 2:08 AM Moderator	Tags : None Hi all, Recently I did my bit for the environment by removing a large goldfish from a creek. Now I have this fish, alive and happy, in a 6 foot tank, and I would like to try6 to breed him/her. But how do you tell if it's a boy or a girl? The fish is about 30cm head to tail, and I intend to go back to the creek and find it a mate, but is it just pot luck? Or is there a surefire way to find it a hetero mate? After I do this I am going to pick your brains on breeding them. Thanks for reading Greg

Is it gold/orange in colour? Do you have a picture of the goldfish you can post fot us to see? It takes abit of 'skill' to determine whether a goldfish is male or female. kEn

Posts: 170 05/07/2006 7:12 PM I'm A White Cloud	Hi Trout Cod, i guess the best time to see if u have a male is when he is in the spawning mood. The males would begin to show tubercles ( white pimply dots) around the gill plates and also along the sides of his pectorals. Females are harder to identify and a pic would definitely help but from my knowledge, the anal vent of the female should protrude outwards whereas the anal vent of the male is concave. Posts: 874 06/07/2006 12:54 AM Moderator	Thanks for that guys, but let me tell you that goldfish are in plague proportion in some areas. I kept my cod alive for two years on wild caught "feeder comets". Saved me a fortune! The fish is orange, with a black back, and looks like a large version of a standard goldfish. And as a subnote, this fish was caught on a hook and line, with worms as bait! It is not the first, and certainly won't be the last. Today I came home from work early, and he had jumped out of the tank. He was on the concrete floor amongst the wires. He had been there for a while, as there was no water on the floor, and he was dry and stiff. I picked him up and was about to dispose of him when his little mouth moved. So I put him back in the water, and massaged him and got the air out of his mouth. A little bit more mouth movement... I propped him upright against the side of the tank with a peice of wood, and he continued to breathe spasmodically. That was two hours ago, and I have been applying a lot of intensive care. His eyes are moving now, I will keep you posted... Greg He looks a bit sick eh? There is a 30cm ruler under him for comparison...

Posts: 295 06/07/2006 8:44 PM Moderator	Isn't it a bit tall for a goldfish? Normally big gold fish are more... koi shaped, as broad as they are tall. Are you sure he's not a loach or something? Mind you, it's only a side on shot.

Goldfish in the wild can grow much bigger than in the aquarium.. think of all that space they have to roam around compared to the glass tanks we have. I too have seen a few large fantails roaming my creek when i was carp fishing... bugger i didn't catch it though hehe. Believe me it was THIS BIG !! Btw Greg, how is the trooper doing? he better now? Posts: 686 06/07/2006 10:11 PM I'm A Black Ghost Knife	I met a bloke at Brimbank Park fishing for goldfish to feed his cat.He said he did it every weekend,when I saw him he had one about 20 cm. If you want clean water for your fish, don't buy reflex paper it comes from Melbournes water catchment.

Looked like he would recover but didn't. I will still get more. Will keep you posted, this was definately a goldfish, and certainly not the biggest I have seen in the wild. Greg

I'm sure a lot of people will be interested in the location of this creek where you caught the fish. If you do catch any wild fish pls be careful not to mix them with your domestic fish in case the wild ones have any parasites or diseases. Cheers, Shan.

Posts: 216 12/07/2006 10:11 PM I'm A Silver Shark	Definitely a shame the fish died. In the past I used to find a few of my larger goldfish outside my pond when i came home from work. Quite often they would survive even after they had been caught by our cat and left in the dirt. Evil cat used to like to catch them, but leave them alive on the ground. Fortunately the cat is now trained to not even attampt to go near the pond. I have even got the dog trained to chase the cat if the cat goes anywhere near the pond while i am not at home. I certainly wouldn't mind a few of those size goldfish in my pond. I was once told a story by one of my uni professors about how he was working on a project that involved something along the lines of stocking sewerage settiling ponds or something like that with goldfish. He said when they pulled them out after a period they looked like footballs with fins. Steve

Posts: 27 20/12/2006 5:51 PM Member level: Snail	these guys are carp, that have been mixed with goldfish that people have released in the rivers ect, we use to catch heaps when i was younger down our local river barwon river, i havent been fishing for years, but i'm sure you can still catch them quiet easily. we actually put 1 or 2 in my neighbours pond about 10 years ago, i have no idea if he is still alive or not. with the sexing of male to female, your male have an inny and a female has an outy females ouy is also abit smaller and rounder and your boys are abit more oval in shape and generally bigger.it is hard to tell though,i just looked at my fish and they all pretty much look like females, but i know for a fact there are more males then females in my tank due to there breeding behaviour.

It must be half carp, because this is my mate lumpy who is a very rotund, very large standard goldfish: You see he's round all over, not flattish and his head is round, large, koi like. This is a carp: A pig of a carp!

Posts: 4 22/11/2008 8:29 AM	I checked on my outdoor fountain/tank and noticed the water level was getting low, so I added more. About two hours later, I came back to find a goldfish had jumped out and was lying on the brick patio in the sun all dried up with ants crawling on him. I picked his crusty body up, intending to bury him, when I felt him move ever so slightly in my hand. I immediately put him back in the water and his gills started moving. He was lying on his side and there is a cloudy film all over him. There are parts where the film is off and his beautiful colors are shining through. I am just not so sure that he can see - is a blind fish able to live with other goldfish? Is there anything else I can do for him? Right now, he is quarantined in a breeding net and is able to keep himself righted. The tank is heated and I have him in a warm area to promote healing. I am afraid to touch the cloudy film on him as it may be a healing process (like a scab)

Blind fish are fine, especially goldfish, they use their noses more than their eyes. In the wild they live in quite muddy water.
