Flushing fish down the drain |
Lead | ||
|
I have been reading a number of posts from an
international forum which suggests that flushing sick
unwanted fish or eggs or hybrids down the drainis an
entirely acceptable practice.
What do you think?? |

Humour me, when is it *necessary* or ok for that
matter to flush a fish down a drain? Don't we get enough
bacterial loads developing in waterways? Dead fish and
fish eggs etc carry all sorts of contaminants. They make
their way down the drain system into open water ways and
get eaten by predators. Nice way to keep the disease
cycle happening, don't u think?
Now Melbourne Bill, you're the expert on pathogens etc. Am I being unrealistic? Is it, from a scientic point of view, ok to flush dead disease ridden fish into waterways? Which reminds me, I've seen numerous LFSs feed dead/dying diseased fish to healthy carnivore fish. Isn't that asking for trouble? I mean, if the reason a dead fish is best removed ASAP from a community tank because of possible disease outbreak, why then put the diseased fish into a healthy fish's system? thanks Du |

I'd have to agree, and I've always cringed when
seeing sick/dead fish fed to piscavores...
eg: if a sick fish has bloat (intestinal tract infection) and a larger fish eats it, would the larger fish then get bloat? I wouldn't risk it. What about even more contagious diseases! And back on the topic, I don't flush any fish down the toilet. If a fish is beyond help, I freeze it to kill it humanely and then put it in the rubbish bin. If I had a garden I'd probably bury it there to be biodegraded/reconstituted. |

I have no understanding what so ever for people
flushing fish down the drain!!!!
Du, I'm totally with you on this one.. There is no reasonable explaination, in my opinion, why they should be flushed, creating more bacteria, and waste poluting our waterways.... Cichlid boy... I also use the freezer method if required, it is much more humane, and of course painless to the fish... Amy. |

Quote: There are many ways to terminate a fish, and I would think the above would be one of the most stressful ways, after all you are not 'snap' freezing it, and the fish would live for some time before its demise. Might be a case of 'out of sight out of mind' Dropping the fish into a plastic bag then a quick slam on something hard is quick IMO. |

Ummm I wouldn't even flush a dead one down the
drain. Too much danger to the environment, nevermind
flushing live fish. Ewww...how mean.

but fish die all the time in the wild, dead fish
isn't a problem, but i think diseased fish could be. and
i would only flush a dead fish, never a live one, i find
that a hit behind the eyes with the butt of a knife or
something kills them quick.
i think freezing is probably one of the cruelist ways ive heard of to get rid of a live fish. |

Flushing live fish is just cruel. If you don't want
it or can't keep it anymore, why not sell it or give it
to someone who cares?
Flushing dead fish is also unacceptable. Do you know where the water you drink come from? Please just bury them in the garden, then remember the mistakes you made which caused its death and try not to let it happen again. Flushing diseased fish is cruel and ignorant. If the fish is sick, you must take care of it and make sure it recovers. If it doesn't, then punish youself for not taking good care of it by watching it die a horrible but at least a quick death. "Quick death" means the fish will die instantly, not over a period of any length. Boon |

Actually freezing is one of the more humane methods
(and its not as stressfull on the assasin either, lol).
When the temperature drops rapidly, just like humans, the
fish fall asleep long before they freeze. If i had to
choose to die, I wouldn't want to be hit on the head, I'd
rather fall asleep!
And, how can you be sure a dead fish isn't a diseased fish, especially when in many cases you can't really verify what it died of? Oh, and when fish die in the wild, they don't usually die of things like what you'd find in the home aquarium. And, they are often they are eaten long before anyone finds any bodies (no time to pollute). Which does pass disease on if it was a sick fish, but its survival of the fittest in the wild, but at home, 1 stupid fish could make a whole county of humans sick...Just food for thought.... Oh, and as far as punishing yourself for not taking care of a fish...what's that about? You can't control genetics if you get inbred guppies from your LFS, can you? Its not always the humans fault when fish get ill... |

Definately wouldn't flush live or sick fish, but as
far as dead ones go, I think the 'drinking water'
arguement is flawed, especially when you consider what
else gets flushed down the TOILET.

bteo3 wrote:Flushing dead fish is unacceptable because the water we drink comes from our toilets? Ok, then we may as well not crap or piss in our toilets either if that's where our drinking water comes from, and if we'll be simply drinking our own crap dissolved in water the next day. How stupid can you get? |

ok well for starters guys. yes flushing a fish down teh toilet is not a good idea. also i prefer the hit on teh head method or the flat side of a blade against
the head and a quick push to crush the head. this is dirty and many are against it im sure but the quickest and painless way to do it is complete destruction
of the brain.
and for those who freeze there fish i hope you use clove oil in the water you freeze. this is because when a fish is being frozen. it dies slowly. the cold also causes its blood cells to crystilize and freeze over leaving you with a frozen fishcicle. this can be painfull and uncomfortable for the fish and cruel. if you must freeze your fish add 3 - 4 drops of clove oil to your 1L of water for freezing. this works as a paralyzing treatment wich forces the fish to s state of relaxation and rest. leaving you with a fish that had fallen asleep well before actually dyeing. like turning off the aquarium lights at night and watching them slow in motion. and yes this is an old topic and a very touchy one at that. everyone to there own imo.... |

when you flush a fish down the drain you are doing something illegal. Any parasites or diseases that fish died of, have just gone into our waterways to infect
other fish. Double wrap in plastic and put it in the bin, or bury it in a potplant and let it be fertiliser.

I bury any fish that dies in my garden, that goes for all pets (lucky I don't have horses ...
)
I've never found a good way to kill a sick fish. Have tried freezing, hitting, placing a a bucket of cold water.... its just a very unpleasant task and one I hope not have to do very often. |
