Posts: 150 17/06/2009 2:28 AM	Tags : None just wondering if all shells are alright to put in an african tank? i no if there taken from the ocean they should have salts cleaned off but my question is mainly targeted at shells you buy as i got told some places sell them lackered as far as i no i have not seen any lackered but i woudlnt no what they look like as i ahve some shells i wnated to put in my tank but wasnt shore if they are lackered or jsut polished like i have also been told anyone can shed some light would be greatly appreciate thanks

Posts: 647 17/06/2009 11:33 PM Member level: Catfish	you can put shels in your african tank. They will up the pH and erode, not very quickly but they will erode. I get mine from my local aquarium. My fish like to use them as hides. I wouldn't put lacquered ones in. The lacquer will pollute the water. And your fish will nibble on it as well and it could harm them. Posts: 240 18/06/2009 9:23 AM	If you need shells, let me know, I got like about 1-2kg spare, I've brought it as shell grit - but its just basically small shells like the ones you find on beaches. Mine were filthy and polluted when I brought it, not sure whether that was due to the long storage of them, but they had other 'junk' in there, washed it several times but still rinsed water still murky. Hence I gave up and brought the proper shell grit (the white shells) Located: Wantirna South 3152

Posts: 647 19/06/2009 8:30 PM Member level: Catfish	where did you get them from? You can buy shellgrit from any aquarium or pet shop. Make sure it's crushed shells with no additives. I also have it on reliable authority not to use too much as it can cause blindness in cichlids. If you just have a couple handfulls mixed in your tank, no problem. Some people have shells as their entire substrate, and that is bad. My preference is to put a few handfulls into a knee high stocking and put the stocking in front of he outlet from your filter. That way, the shells don't get a buildup of calcium becuase the water isn't still and if the pH goes too high, its easy to remove. -o00o- Haidee "I'd hug you, but first I need a new shirt. Posts: 150 19/06/2009 8:51 PM	i am not talking about shell grit i am talking about shells for my shell dwellers to breed in i have a heap and want to put my best ones in whihc originally thought was alright but after explaining what they look like to somone they said instead of them jsut being polished ( like rubbed down to make smooth) they could infact be lactered mind you this person never saw them but jsut advised me as a precaution so this takes me back to my question how can i tell if a shell has been lactered or jsut polished? ? ? ? ?

Posts: 647 20/06/2009 1:45 PM Member level: Catfish	WHERE DID YOU GET THEM? That is the first question. If you got them from an aquarium or pet shop it isn't likely they are lacquered. If you bought them from a souveneir shop they WILL be lacquered. If you bought them from a random shop they are LIKELY to be lacquered. If you got them from a friend, who knows. Rub gently across the surface of the shell with a knife. If it's lacquered it will flake off. But personally, I wouldn't trust a shell unless I knew where I got it.
