We are not the only ones suffering the effects of this heat wave. Our fish are suffering too. Coldwater fish will start to suffer in temperatures over 26
degrees C and tropical fish at 28-30 degrees C. Some suffer more than others as, not only the water heats up, but it starts holding less oxygen. Fish may
gasp at the surface or sit on the bottom. Other stress symptoms may include fungal and bacterial infections. In order to bring down water temperature and
increase oxygenation levels there are a number of recommendations.
* Increase water circulation by increasing pump outputs, directing water outlets directly onto surface of water and/or adding large airstones.
* Place a fan so that it is blowing directly over the surface of the water.
* Float bottles of frozen water in tank and replace when thawed. This method prevents adding untreated tap water to the tank. You will need to keep plently
of frozen bottles on hand, larger bottles being more effective than smaller ones.
* Perform small water changes (10%), but this is only effective short term and to avoid further stress on fish you cannot do this too frequently.
Good luck and may you and all your pets survive this heat :-)
