I noticed late last month Ion the 28th) that my female Leptostoma was holding eggs and so on the 12th June I removed the babies from the mother. The babies
appeared very immature, with HUGE egg yolks. I retrieved five, but one died a couple of days later. I feel that they may have been slow to develop as the tank
had been kept at about 22 degrees. Anyway, the four are fine and free swimming a lot, but they still have some eggs yolk bellies, rather than just bellies. My
question is, when should I start feeding them? After I removed the fry from the mother, the mother would not eat for at least another five days. I was really
concerned for her health and even thought I was going to lose her. Some of her fins became frayed as well, she almost lost all her pectoral fins and they
seemed to have fin-rot! Whilst her fins are still growing back, she seems pretty healthy now and eats well. I feel that I may have damaged her mouth even
though I was very careful and used a cotton wool bud to pries her mouth open. I also made sure there was no air bubble inside her mouth after I had released
the babies. Any ideas on how I could have gone about this better? Perhaps I should have left the female to hold longer? Perhaps kept them at a higher
temperature to speed up their development? I have a pair of Calvus in the same tank and that's why I wanted to separate the babies before the female
released them.
